His saying: "So do not attribute to Allah equals"

228 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr—meaning ibn 'Umarah—narrated to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "So do not attribute to Allah equals," he said: Counterparts.

229 - Ahmad ibn 'Amr ibn Abi 'Asim al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad narrated to us: Abu 'Umar narrated to me, Abu 'Asim narrated to me, Shabib ibn Bishr informed us, 'Ikrimah narrated to us, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "So do not attribute to Allah equals," he said: "Equals" (al-andad) is polytheism (shirk), more hidden than the crawling of an ant upon a black rock in the darkness of the night. It is for one to say: "By Allah, by your life, O so-and-so, and by my life." And for one to say: "Were it not for this dog of his, the thieves would have come to us," and "Were it not for the ducks in the house, the thieves would have come." And the saying of a man to his companion: "What Allah wills and you will," and the saying of a man: "Were it not for Allah and so-and-so." Do not include "so-and-so" in it, for all of this is polytheism (shirk) in it.

230 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi' from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "Equals," meaning: Equivalent, polytheism. It has been narrated from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, Qatadah, al-Suddi, Abu Malik, and Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid something similar.

His saying: "While you know [it]"

231 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [it]"—meaning: Do not associate with Allah others from the equals that neither benefit nor harm, while you know that there is no Lord for you who provides for you other than Him, and you have learned that which the Messenger invites you to of His Oneness is the truth, in which there is no doubt.

232 - 'Amr ibn Thawr al-Qaysari informed me in what he wrote to me, al-Firyabi narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from the one who narrated to him, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [it]," he said: You know that He is one God in the Torah and the Gospel.

233 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah: "So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [it]"—that Allah created you and created the heavens and the earth, then you attribute equals to Him.
