360 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan ibn Salih narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,'" he said: The prostration was for Adam, and the obedience was to Allah.

His saying: "So they prostrated, except Iblis"

361 - My father narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman narrated to me, 'Abbad—meaning ibn al-'Awwam—narrated to us, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, from Ya'la ibn Muslim, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Iblis's name was 'Azazil, and he was among the most honorable of the angels, one of those with four wings; then he was cast out (ublisa) thereafter.

362 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: He was only called Iblis because Allah caused him to despair (ablasahu) of all goodness and made him hopeless of it.

It was narrated from Qatadah that he was caused to despair of obedience.

It was narrated from al-Suddi something similar to the saying of Ibn 'Abbas.

His saying: "He refused"

363 - Muhammad ibn Hibal al-Qahandazi narrated to us, in what he wrote to me, 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Ghaffar al-Qahandazi narrated to us, he said: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah was asked about His saying: "...will enter Paradise except he who refuses." He said: "Except he who disobeys Allah," due to His saying, the Almighty and Exalted: "So they prostrated, except Iblis."

His saying: "He refused and was arrogant"

364 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah: His saying, "He refused and was arrogant and became one of the disbelievers." The enemy of Allah, Iblis, envied Adam for the honor Allah gave him, and he said: "I am of fire, and this is of clay." The beginning of sins was arrogance; the enemy of Allah was arrogant to prostrate to Adam.

365 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us, Isra'il reported to us, from al-Suddi, from someone who narrated to him, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Iblis was a guardian over the angels of the lowest heaven. He said: So he contemplated disobedience, transgressed, and was arrogant.

His saying: "And became one of the disbelievers"

366 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Usamah narrated to us, Salih ibn Hayyan narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Buraydah narrated to us, regarding His saying: "And became one of the disbelievers," [he said]: From those who refused, so the Fire burned them.
