It was said to him: "Yes." "And did You breathe into me from Your spirit?" It was said to him: "Yes." "And I sneezed, so You said: 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and Your mercy preceded Your wrath?" It was said: "Yes." "And did You write upon me that I would do this?" It was said: "Yes." He said: "Tell me, if I repent, will You return me to Paradise?" He said: "Yes." 'Attiyah and al-Suddi interpreted it likewise.
The Third Aspect:
408 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Nufayli narrated to us, Zuhayr narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from a man from Banu Tamim, he said: I came to Ibn 'Abbas and asked him: What are the words that Adam received from his Lord? He said: He was taught the rites of Hajj, and those are the words.
The Fourth Aspect:
409 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman—meaning Ibn Mahdi—narrated to us, from Sufyan, from 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Rufay', a man who heard 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr say reported to me: Adam said: "O Lord, my sin that I committed, is it something You wrote upon me before You created me, or something I initiated of my own accord?" He said: "Rather, I wrote it upon you before I created you." He said: "Then just as You wrote it upon me, forgive it for me." He said: That is His saying: "Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words."
The Fifth Aspect:
410 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, Ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Khusayf, from Mujahid and Sa'id ibn Jubayr: "Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words," they both said: His saying: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." It was narrated from al-Hasan, Qatadah, Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi, Khalid ibn Ma'dan, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas something similar.
The Sixth Aspect:
411 - My father narrated to us, Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us, Shibl narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Kathir narrated to me, that Mujahid used to say regarding the saying of Allah "Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words": The words are: "O Allah, there is no god but You, glory be to You and with Your praise. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for You are the best of the forgiving. O Allah, there is no god but You, glory be to You and with Your praise. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so turn to me in repentance, for You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."
