When Allah the Almighty wanted to restore Sulayman's kingdom to him, peace be upon him, He cast into the hearts of the people a rejection of that devil. They sent to the women of Sulayman, peace be upon him, and asked them, "Does anything occur from Sulayman?" They replied, "Yes, he comes to us while we are menstruating, which he did not do before that." When the devil saw that his secret had been discovered, he thought that his affair had come to an end. They wrote books containing sorcery and deception, buried them under Sulayman's throne, and then excavated them and read them to the people, saying, "It is by this that Sulayman appeared before the people and overcame them." Thus, the people declared Sulayman a disbeliever, and they continued to charge him with disbelief. That devil sent the ring, so Sulayman, peace be upon him, called [a man] and said, "Will you carry this fish for me?" Then he went to his house. When the man reached the door of his house, he gave him the fish that had the ring in its belly. Sulayman, peace be upon him, took it, slit its belly, and the ring was in its interior. He took it and wore it. When he wore it, mankind, the jinn, and the devils became subservient to him again, and he returned to his former state. The devil fled until he reached one of the islands of the sea. Sulayman, peace be upon him, sent people in pursuit of him; he was an insolent devil. They sought him but could not capture him until they found him sleeping one day. They came and built a structure of lead over him. He awoke and jumped, but he could not remain in any place in the house without the lead moving with him. They captured him, bound him, and brought him to Sulayman, peace be upon him. He commanded that a hole be carved for him in marble, then he was inserted inside it, then it was sealed with copper. Then he commanded that he be thrown into the sea. That is [the meaning of] His saying: "And We certainly tried Sulayman and placed on his throne a body," meaning the devil who had dominated him.
18356 - From Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: While Sulayman ibn Dawud was sitting on the seashore, he was sending his ring when it fell from him into the sea. His kingdom was in his ring. He left and left a devil behind in his household. He came to an old woman and sought shelter with her. The old woman said to him, "If you wish, you may leave and go seek, and I will suffice you with the housework; or if you wish, you may suffice me with the housework, and I will go and search." He said, [and so he left] to search. He came to some people fishing for fish and sat with them. They cast some fish, and he left with them until he came to the old woman. She began to clean it and slit the belly of a fish, and behold, the ring was inside it. She took it and said to Sulayman, peace be upon him, "What is this?" Sulayman, peace be upon him, took it and wore it, and [the beings] began to approach him.
