by whistling and causing confusion in speech against the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, whenever he recited the Qur'an; the Quraish used to do that.

His saying, the Almighty: "Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and mankind."

18460 - From 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that he was asked about His saying: "Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and mankind," he said: "He is the son of Adam who killed his brother, and Iblis."

His saying, the Almighty: "What is said to you"

18461 - From Qatada, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "What is said to you" of denial, "except what has already been said to the messengers before you." Just as you have been denied, they were denied; and just as they were patient with the harm their people inflicted upon them, so be patient with the harm your people inflict upon you.

His saying, the Almighty: "And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an"

18462 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an"—the verse—he says: "If We had made the Qur'an non-Arabic while your tongue, O Muhammad, is Arabic, they would have said: 'How is it non-Arabic and [he is] an Arab? He brings it to us as something different or mixed! Why were its verses not detailed?' So the Qur'an was like the [Arabic] tongue." He says: "So He did not do that, so they would not say [that], and thus it was an argument against them."

18463 - My father narrated to us, Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to me, Hammad narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, he said: This verse was revealed: "Indeed, your Lord is full of forgiveness." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Were it not for Allah's forgiveness and His overlooking, life would not be pleasant for anyone, and were it not for His warning and His punishment, every person would have surely perished."
