His saying, the Almighty: "And those who argue concerning Allah after He has been responded to."

18468 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And those who argue concerning Allah after He has been responded to," he said: They are the People of the Scripture. They used to argue with the Muslims and turn them away from the guidance after they had responded to Allah. He also said: They are a people from among the people of misguidance, and it was responded to their misguidance while they were waiting for the Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) to come to them.

His saying, the Almighty: "I do not ask of you for this any payment."

18469 - By the path of Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to them: "I do not ask of you for this any payment, except that you show love to me in my person because of my kinship with you, and that you maintain the kinship that is between me and you."

His saying, the Almighty: "Except for the love for the kinsfolk."

18470 - By the path of 'Ali, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "Except for the love for the kinsfolk," he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had kinship with all of the Quraysh. When they rejected him and refused to pledge allegiance to him, he said: "O my people, if you refuse to pledge allegiance to me, then protect my kinship among you, and let not others of the Arabs be more entitled to protecting and supporting me than you."

18471 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: This verse was revealed in Mecca, and the polytheists were harming the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). So Allah, the Almighty, revealed: Say to them, O Muhammad, "I do not ask of you for this"—meaning upon what I am inviting you to—"any payment"—a compensation from the world—"except the love for the kinsfolk," except for the protection for my sake in my kinship among you. He said: The love is solely for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) regarding his kinship. When he migrated to Medina, he desired that He join him with his brothers among the prophets, peace be upon them, so he said: "I do not ask of you for this any payment... for it is yours; my payment is only from Allah," meaning His reward and His nobility in the Hereafter, just as Noah, peace be upon him, said: "And I ask of you for it no payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds," and just as Hud, Salih, and Shu'ayb said. They did not exclude any payment as the Prophet (peace be upon him) excluded, so he returned it to them, and it is abrogated.
