His saying, the Exalted: "And what will make you know?"

17798 - From Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, may God be pleased with him, he said: Everything in the Quran [containing the phrase] "And what will make you know (wa ma yudrika)" [the speaker] was not informed of it; and whatever [is phrased as] "And what will make you know (ma adraka)" [the speaker] has been informed of it (1).

His saying, the Exalted: "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries"

17799 - From Qatadah, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries," [meaning] our leaders in evil and shirk (associating partners with God). "Our Lord, give them a double punishment," meaning by that, Hellfire (2).

His saying, the Exalted: "O you who have believed, be not like those who annoyed Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said."

17800 - From Abu Hurayrah, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: Moses, peace be upon him, was a shy, modest man who would not let any part of his skin be seen out of modesty. So those who annoyed him from among the Children of Israel annoyed him and said: "This one does not cover himself this way except because of a defect in his skin, either leprosy, swelling, or some other ailment." And God wished to clear him of what they said. One day, Moses, peace be upon him, withdrew by himself and placed his garments on a stone, then bathed. When he finished, he turned to his clothes to take them, but the stone ran off with his garment. Moses, peace be upon him, took his staff and chased the stone, saying: "My garment, O stone! My garment, O stone!" until he reached a group of the Children of Israel, and they saw him naked—the most beautiful [of creation] that God had created—and He cleared him of what they said. The stone stopped, and he took his garment and put it on, and he began beating the stone with his staff. By God, there is a mark on the stone from the effect of his beating it three, four, or five times. That is [the meaning of] His saying: "O you who have believed, be not like those who annoyed Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said" (3).

17801 - From Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with both of them, from Ali ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Be not like those who annoyed Moses," he said: Moses and Aaron ascended the mountain, and Aaron, peace be upon him, died. So the Children of Israel said to Moses, peace be upon him: "You killed him; he was more loving to us than you and gentler." They annoyed him regarding that, so God commanded the angels, peace be upon them, and they carried him and passed by the assemblies of the Children of Israel, and the angels, peace be upon them, spoke of his death. So God cleared him of that. They departed with him and buried him, and his grave was not known except by the vulture (al-rakham), and God made it deaf and dumb.
