- My father narrated to us, [who said:] Sa‘id ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [who said:] ‘Abbad ibn al-‘Awwam narrated to us, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, [who said:] al-Hakam narrated to us, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with them, regarding His saying: "Then Allah cleared him of what they said," he said: Moses and Aaron ascended the mountain, and Aaron, peace be upon him, died. So the Children of Israel said to Moses, peace be upon him: "You killed him; he was gentler to us than you and more bashful." They annoyed him regarding that, so God commanded the angels, and they carried him and passed by the assemblies of the Children of Israel, and they spoke of his death. So the place of his grave was not known except by the vulture, and God made it deaf and dumb (1).
- From Ibn Mas‘ud, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, made a division [of spoils], so a man said: "Indeed, this is a division by which the Face of God was not intended." This was mentioned to the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and his face turned red, then he said: "May the mercy of God be upon Moses; he was annoyed by more than this, yet he was patient" (2).
His saying, the Exalted: "And he was, in the sight of Allah, distinguished."
- From al-Hasan, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And he was, in the sight of Allah, distinguished," he said: One whose supplication is answered (3).
- From Sinan, from someone who narrated to him, regarding His saying: "And he was, in the sight of Allah, distinguished," he said: Moses, peace be upon him, never asked his Lord for a thing but that He granted it to him, except for [the ability to] look [upon Him] (4).
- From Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, led us in the noon (dhuhr) prayer, then said: "Remain in your places. Then he came to the men and said: "Indeed, God has commanded me to command you to fear God and to speak a fitting word." Then he came to the women and said: "Indeed, God has commanded me to command you to fear God and to speak a fitting word" (5).
- From Qatadah, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "a fitting word," he said: Justice (6).
- From Mujahid, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "a fitting word," he said: Rightness (7).
- From ‘Ikrimah, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "and speak a fitting word," he said: Say: There is no god but God (8).
