Surat al-Tahrim (66)
His saying, the Almighty: "O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you?"
18920 - From Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to drink a beverage of honey at Sawdah's. He then entered upon 'A'ishah, and she said: "I perceive a scent from you." He then entered upon Hafsah, and she said: "I perceive a scent from you." So he said: "I think it is from a beverage I drank at Sawdah's; by Allah, I will not drink it [again]." Then Allah revealed: "O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you?" (the verse).(1)
18921 - And with a weak chain of narration from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: This verse, "O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you?" was revealed regarding the woman who gifted herself to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).(2)
His saying, the Almighty: "He made known part of it and ignored a part."
18922 - From Mujahid, regarding His saying: "He made known part of it and ignored a part," he said: The part he made known was the affair of Mariyah, and the part he ignored was his saying: "Your father and her father shall be in charge of the people after me," for fear that it would spread.(3)
His saying, the Almighty: "And the righteous among the believers."
18923 - And with a weak chain of narration from 'Ali, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said regarding His saying: "And the righteous among the believers": "He is 'Ali ibn Abi Talib."(4)
18924 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding His saying: "And the righteous among the believers," he said: It was revealed specifically concerning 'Umar.(5)
18925 - From al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the "sincere repentance," and he said: "That a man repents from an evil deed, then never returns to it ever."(6)
18926 - And with a weak chain of narration from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, he said: I asked the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) about the "sincere repentance," and he said: "It is remorse for the sin when it occurs from you, so you seek Allah's forgiveness in your state of remorse at the moment of the deed, then you never return to it ever."(7)
His saying, the Almighty: "So they betrayed them."
18927 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding His saying: "So they betrayed them," he said: They did not commit adultery. As for the betrayal of the wife of Nuh, she used to say to the people: "He is a madman." And as for the betrayal of the wife of Lut, she used to guide [people] to the guests; that was her betrayal."(8)
