Surat al-Mulk (67)
His saying, the Almighty: "He who created death and life."
18928 - From Qatadah, regarding His saying: "He who created death and life," he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to say: "Indeed, Allah has humbled the children of Adam through death, and He made the world a house of life, then a house of death. And He made the Hereafter a house of recompense, then a house of eternity."(1)
18929 - From Qatadah, regarding His saying: "He who created death and life," he said: "Life is the horse of Jibril (peace be upon him), and death is a mottled ram."(2)
His saying, the Almighty: "Of disparity."
18930 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Of disparity," he said: "Splitting/Cracking." And regarding His saying: "Do you see any rifts [futur]?" he said: "Cracks." And regarding His saying: "Humbled [kasi'an]," he said: "Abased." And "[eyesight] will return to you fatigued [hasir]," he said: "Weary."(3)
His saying, the Almighty: "So away [suhqan] with."
18931 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding "suhqan," he said: "Distance/Remoteness."(4)
His saying, the Almighty: "Its slopes/paths [manakibiha]."
18932 - My father narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hakim al-Azdi narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Yunus ibn Jubayr, from Bashir ibn Ka'b, that he recited this verse: "So walk among its paths [manakibiha]," and he said to a slave-woman of his: "If you know the meaning of 'manakibiha,' you are free." She replied: "They are the mountains." So he asked Abu al-Darda', who said: "They are the mountains."(5)
His saying, the Almighty: "Aversion [nufur]."
18933 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding His saying: "Nay, they have persisted in insolence and aversion [nufur]," he said: "In error."(6)
His saying, the Almighty: "Falling on his face [mukibban]."
18934 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding "Is one who walks falling on his face [mukibban]," he said: "In error." "Better than one who walks upright [sawiyyan]," he said: "Guided."(7)
His saying, the Almighty: "Flowing [ma'in]."
18935 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding "with water flowing [ma'in]," he said: "Visible."(8)
