The saying of the Almighty: "That is more likely that they may be comforted and not grieve."
The saying of the Almighty: "You can postpone whom you will of them, and you may receive whom you will..." up to the verse.
17736 - From Aisha, she said: I used to be jealous of those who gave themselves to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), and I would say: "How can she give herself?" But when God revealed: "You can postpone whom you will of them, and you may receive whom you will; and whomsoever you desire of those whom you have set aside, there is no blame on you," I said: "I see your Lord only hastens to satisfy your desires." (2)
17737 - Abu Zur'a narrated to us, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Shayba narrated to us, Umar ibn Abi Bakr narrated to me, al-Mughira ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hizami narrated to me, from Abu al-Nadr, the freed slave of Umar ibn Ubayd Allah, from Abd Allah ibn Wahb ibn Zam'a, from Umm Salama, that she said: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) did not die until God made it lawful for him to marry any women he wished, except for those who are mahram (prohibited due to kin); and that is the saying of God (Mighty and Majestic): "You can postpone whom you will of them, and you may receive whom you will." (3)
17738 - From al-Sha'bi, may God be pleased with him, he said: There were women who gave themselves to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). He consummated the marriage with some of them and postponed others, so he did not approach them until he passed away, and they were not married after him; among them was Umm Sharik. That is His saying: "You can postpone whom you will of them, and you may receive whom you will; and whomsoever you desire of those whom you have set aside, there is no blame on you." (4)
17739 - From Abu Zayd, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) intended to divorce some of his wives. When they saw that, they came to him and said: "Do not set us free; you are authorized to decide between us and yourself. Grant us whatever you wish from yourself and your wealth." So God revealed: "You can postpone whom you will of them"—meaning, you set aside whom you wish. So he postponed some of them and received others. Among those who were postponed were Maymuna, Juwayriya, Umm Habiba, Safiyya, and Sawda. He used to distribute among them from himself and his wealth as he wished. Among those whom he received were Aisha, Hafsa, Umm Salama, and Zaynab. His distribution from himself and his wealth among them was equal. (5)
