18290 - From Abu Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: Jonah, peace be upon him, stayed in the belly of the whale for forty days (1).

18291 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: Jonah stayed in the belly of the whale for seven days, and it traveled with him through all the seas, then it cast him out on the shore of the Tigris (2).

18292 - From Qatada, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: "And the whale swallowed him," it is said it was called Najm, and he stayed for three [days] in its belly. Regarding His saying: "Had he not been of those who glorify [Allah]," he said: "He was someone who performed much prayer in times of ease. If he had not been saved and had he stayed in its belly," he said: "The belly of the whale would have become a grave for him until the day they are resurrected," he said: "Until the Day of Resurrection." Regarding His saying: "And We cast him into the open shore," he said: "The shore of the Tigris, and Nineveh is on the shore of the Tigris. He remained in its belly for forty days, as it moved him about in the Tigris (3)."

His saying, the Almighty: "And We cast him into the open shore."

18293 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And We caused a gourd tree to grow over him," he said: "The pumpkin" (4).

18294 - From Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "A gourd tree," he said: "The pumpkin." From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: "Every tree that has no trunk is from the yaqtin (gourd), and that which is on the face of the earth, such as melons and cucumbers."

18295 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, that he was asked about the yaqtin: Is it the pumpkin? He said: "No, rather it is a tree that Allah called al-yaqtin, which shaded him" (5).

His saying, the Almighty: "And We sent him."

18296 - From al-Hasan and Qatada regarding His saying: "And We sent him," they both said: "Allah the Almighty sent him before what befell him; he was sent to the people of Nineveh in the land of Mosul" (6).

His saying, the Almighty: "[To] a hundred thousand or more."

18297 - From Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about His saying: "And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more," he said: "They exceed by twenty thousand" (7).
