17759 - My father told us, Abu al-Muzaffar told us, Ja'far ibn Sulayman told us, from al-Ja'd Abu 'Uthman al-Yashkuri, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) consummated his marriage with some of his wives, and Umm Sulaym made hais (a mixture of dates and ghee) and placed it in a bowl, then said: "Take this to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), greet him with peace on my behalf, and inform him that this is a little [gift] from us to him." Anas said: The people were in hardship that day. I brought it and said: "O Messenger of God, Umm Sulaym sent this to you, and she greets you with peace and says: 'Inform him that this is a little from us to him'." He looked at it and said: "Place it down." I placed it in a corner of the house. Then he said: "Go and invite so-and-so and so-and-so for me"—he named many men—"and whoever you meet from the Muslims." I invited whom he told me, and whoever I met from the Muslims. I arrived and the house, the Suffah (bench), and the room were full of people. I said: "O Abu 'Uthman, how many were they?" He replied: "They were about three hundred." Anas said: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said to me: "Bring it here." I brought it to him, and he placed his hand upon it, prayed, and said what God willed. Then he said: "Let them form groups of ten, and let them mention [the name of God], and let each person eat from what is nearest to him." They began to mention the name of God and eat until they all had eaten. Then the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said to me: "Remove it." He said: I took the bowl, and I do not know if it was more when I put it down or when I took it away? He said: Some men stayed behind talking in the house of the Messenger of God, and the wife of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) with whom he had just consummated the marriage was with them, turning her face toward the wall. They prolonged the conversation and burdened the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), and he was the most modest of people; if he had informed them, it would have been difficult for them. So the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) stood up and went out, and greeted his rooms and his wives. When they saw that he had returned, they thought that they had become a burden to him, so they hurried to the door and left. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) came in and lowered the curtain and entered the house, while I was in the room. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) stayed in his house for a while, and God revealed the Quran to him. He came out reciting this verse: 'O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without waiting for its preparation. But when you are invited, then enter. And when you have eaten, disperse...' up to His saying: '...is Knowing of all things.' Anas said: He recited them to me before the people, so I am the most recent among the people to have heard them (1).

17760 - From Sulayman ibn Arqam, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'nor seeking to stay for a chat' (wa la musta'nisina li-hadithin), he said: 'It was revealed regarding those who are burdensome' (2).
