So he went out and placed it in the hand of a thief. In the morning, they were talking, 'Charity was given to a thief tonight.' He said: 'O Allah, praise be to You for the adulteress, for the wealthy man, and for the thief.' Then he was approached and it was said to him: 'As for your charity, it has been accepted. As for the adulteress, perhaps she may refrain from her adultery because of it; perhaps the wealthy man may take heed and spend from what he has been given; and perhaps the thief may refrain from his theft because of it.'
