Ibn Ja'far said in his hadith: Ibn Shihab informed us, from Salim, from his father: That Ghaylan ibn Salamah al-Thaqafi accepted Islam while he had ten wives. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: "Choose four from among them."

859: 4759: Or one (fawahidah): 1: Al-Dahhak and others said in the interpretation of this verse: In regard to inclination, affection, intimacy, companionship, and fair division between the four, three, or two wives, then one.

He forbade the excess that leads to the abandonment of justice in division and good companionship. That is evidence for the obligation of that, and Allah knows best.
