Thus, it serves as an interrupted 'am' (interrogative), its meaning being a turn away from the first [point] and an initiation of the second. It is also said: It is a conjunction to an omitted phrase because they were too proud to follow Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The estimated meaning is: 'Are they more worthy of prophethood than the one whom He sent? 5463: That: 2: Or do they have a share of the kingdom?'.

Abu al-'Aliyah said: I asked Ibn 'Abbas about the 'naqir', so he placed the tip of his thumb on the inside of his index finger and then raised it and said: 'This is the naqir.' The naqir is originally something used for digging and for fermentation (nabidh), and the prohibition regarding it came [in the early period] and was then abrogated.

It is also said: The pronoun in 'it' refers to Abraham. The meaning is: 'And from the progeny of Abraham are those who believed in him, and among them are those who turned away from him.' It is also said: It refers to the Book. And Allah knows best.
