The breaking of the fast (al-fitr): 1: Imam Abu Ja'far ibn Jarir said: 'Abd al-A'la ibn Wasil al-Asadi narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi reported to us from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever departs from this world upon sincerity alone and the worship of Him, associating nothing with Him, departs from it while Allah is pleased with him."

Meaning: He should not outstrip me. And 'covenant' (ahd) is a noun that exists. In the verse, there is an elision, meaning: How can there be a covenant for the polytheists while they harbor treachery? It was also said: The meaning is, how can the polytheists have a covenant with Allah by which they would be safe from His punishment tomorrow, and how can they have a covenant with His Messenger by which they would be safe from the punishment of the world?

A pledge (dhimmah): 1: Al-Qurtubi said in the interpretation of this verse: He repeated the exclamation regarding their having a covenant due to the depravity of their deeds, meaning: How can they have a covenant while 'if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe regarding you any pact or covenant' (Qur'an 9:8). It is said: 'I dominated over such-and-such person' (zahartu 'ala), meaning I overcame him; and 'I climbed the house' (zahartu al-bayt), meaning I ascended it, and from this is 'they were unable to climb it' (fama istata'u an yazzaharu), meaning to climb upon it.
