And His statement: "plowing": Ibn Abbas said: [they are] moving (jawari), derived from 'it ran and it flows.' It is also said: "plowing" means pushing deep inside the sea, and the root of 'makhr' is cleaving the water to the right and left. The ship 'makhart' (cleaved), it 'tamkhuru' and 'tamkharu'—an act of 'makhran' and 'mukwuran'—if it proceeds by cleaving the water with a sound. From this is the Almighty's saying: "And you see the ships plowing through it," meaning moving. Al-Jawhari said: A swimmer 'makhar' when he cleaves the water with his chest, and he 'makhar' the earth by digging it for planting, and 'makharaha' with water if he traps the water in it until it becomes 'aridah', meaning: suitable for the quality of crop growth.
