Al-Qurtubi said: Their plotting is what was narrated, that these nine men, when it was the beginning of the three days after the hamstringing of the she-camel, and Salih had informed them of the coming of the punishment, they conspired and swore an oath to come to Salih's house at night and kill him and his family members who were close to him. They said: If he is a liar in his threat, we will inflict upon him what he deserves, and if he is truthful, we will have hastened his [death] and healed our souls. This was stated by Mujahid and others.

Al-Nahhas said: This is more appropriate because the Quran was revealed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and everything in it is addressed to him—upon him be peace—except for that which its meaning is not valid except for someone else.
