oppressed in the land, meaning: We favor them and bestow blessings upon them, and this is a narrative of what has passed.

There is a disagreement regarding this inspiration to the mother of Moses; one group said: It was a statement in her dream; Qatada said: It was an inspiration (ilham); and another group said: It was by an angel who appeared to her.

2944: 16692: And sorrow: 1: Ibn Kathir said in his commentary on this verse: The 'lam' here is the 'lam' of consequence (lam al-aqibah), not the 'lam' of causation (lam al-ta'lil), because they did not intend for this to happen by picking him up. There is no doubt that the apparent wording supports what they said, but if one looks at the meaning of the context, then the 'lam' remains one of causation, for its meaning is that Allah, the Exalted, disposed them to pick him up so that He might make him an enemy to them and a source of sorrow, which is more emphatic in nullifying their caution against him.
