: 13664: Counting them: 4: It was narrated from 'Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sat before him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have servants who lie to me, disobey me, and I strike them and insult them; so what is my standing with them? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Calculate what they betrayed you in, disobeyed you in, and lied to you in, and your punishment of them. If your punishment of them is equivalent to their sins, it will be a balance, neither for you nor against you. If your punishment of them is less than their sins, it will be a surplus (favor) for you. And if your punishment of them is greater than their sins, the surplus that remains against you will be retaliated for them from you." The man began to weep before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and lament. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "What is the matter with him? Does he not read the Book of Allah?" (Tafsir Ibn Kathir (3/181).
