"Will you not tell us about Mu'adh b. Jabal?" He said, "Yes, I heard him saying: 'People will be detained on the Day of Resurrection in one open plain, then a caller will call out: Where are the righteous? They will stand in the shelter of the Most Merciful; Allah will not veil Himself from them nor hide.' I said: Who are the righteous? He said: 'A people who guarded against polytheism and the worship of idols, and who devoted their worship sincerely to Allah, so they will pass on to Paradise.'"
His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, those who exchange..."
3720 - Muhammad b. 'Ammar narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Ubayd—meaning al-Tanafisi—narrated to us, Waqid, the sheep seller, narrated to me, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, he said: Whoever reads the Quran to eat off the people by means of it will come to Allah on the Day of Resurrection with his face between his shoulder blades. That is because Allah says: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price."
His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price."
[The First Aspect]
3721 - Al-Hasan b. 'Arafah narrated to us, 'Ammar b. Muhammad narrated to me, from Mansur b. al-Mu'tamir, from Shaqiq b. Salamah, from 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud: We were sitting with him in the mosque, and he said: "Whoever swears an oath to obtain wealth thereby, while he is a liar in it, will meet Allah while He is angry with him. The explanation of that is in the Quran: 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price' to the end of the verse." He said: Then al-Ash'ath b. Qays came in that state and said: "By Allah, this verse was revealed concerning me. There was a dispute between me and a man regarding a well, so I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said: 'Bring your two witnesses, or else his oath.'" He said: "I said: By Allah, then, O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he will swear a false oath while he is a liar in it." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Whoever swears an oath to obtain wealth thereby, while he is a liar in it, will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Then it was revealed in the Quran: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price" to the end of the verse.
The Second Aspect:
3722 - Al-Hasan b. 'Arafah narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, al-'Awwam—meaning Ibn Hawshab—informed us, from Ibrahim b. 'Abd al-Rahman—meaning al-Saksaki—from 'Abd Allah b. Abi Awfa, that a man set up...
