The Second Aspect:

3732 - Al-Hasan b. Ahmad narrated to us, Musa b. Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad b. Mansur narrated to me, he said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "And indeed, there is among them a party who distort their tongues with the Book." He said: They are all the People of the Book.

His saying, the Exalted: "to make you think it is from the Book, while it is not from the Book"

[The First Aspect]

3733 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed me, in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas, concerning His saying: "distort their tongues with the Book to make you think it is from the Book," and they are the Jews; they used to add to the Book of Allah that which Allah had not revealed.

The Second Aspect:

3734 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, concerning His saying: "And indeed, there is among them a party who distort their tongues with the Book," he said: They corrupt it. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this has been narrated from al-Sha'bi, al-Hasan, Qatadah, and al-Rabi' b. Anas.

His saying, the Exalted: "And they say, 'It is from Allah,' but it is not from Allah."

3735 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tihrani informed me, in what he wrote to me, Isma'il b. 'Abd al-Karim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Samad b. Ma'qil narrated to me, that he heard Wahb saying: "The Torah and the Gospel, as Allah revealed them, not a single letter was changed from them, but they lead people astray through corruption and interpretation, and books they used to write with their own hands and say, 'It is from Allah,' while it is not from Allah. As for the Books of Allah, they are preserved and are not altered."

3736 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' b. Anas, concerning: "And they say, 'It is from Allah,' but it is not from Allah," he said: They are the enemies of Allah, the Jews; they corrupted the Book of Allah, innovated therein, and claimed that it was from Allah."

الحواشي

(1). Al-Tafsir, 1/129. (2). Ibn Kathir said: If Wahb meant what they have in their possession of that, then there is no doubt that it has undergone alteration, corruption, addition, and omission. As for the interpretation of that which is observed in Arabic, it contains significant errors, many additions, deletions, and grave delusions—this is a matter of interpreting the interpreted and expressed, and the understanding of many of them, rather the majority, indeed all of them, is corrupt. But if he meant the Books of Allah as they are with Him, then they are as He said: preserved, and nothing has entered them (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2/54).
