4616 - ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding "You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves," he said: He is informing the believers that He will surely test them, and He shall see how their patience is regarding their religion.
His saying, the Exalted: "And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture..." to His saying: "...many."
4617 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih and Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us; they both said: Yunus—meaning Ibn Bukayr—narrated to us, Ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from ‘Ikrimah, that he narrated to him, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: This was revealed regarding Abu Bakr and the anger he reached because of that: "And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse."
4618 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Shu‘ayb ibn Abi Hamzah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed us that Usamah ibn Zayd informed him, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his companions used to pardon the polytheists and the People of the Scripture just as Allah had commanded them, and they used to be patient in the face of abuse. Allah the Exalted said: "And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to interpret the pardon as that which Allah had commanded him until Allah gave [him] permission [to fight] them.
4619 - al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi‘ narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma‘mar informed us, from al-Zuhri regarding His saying: "And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse," he said: It is Ka‘b ibn al-Ashraf, and he used to incite the polytheists against the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his companions in his poetry, and he would lampoon the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his companions.
His saying, the Exalted: "But if you observe patience and fear Allah, indeed, that is of the matters [worthy of] determination."
4620 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, ‘Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "But if you observe patience and fear Allah, indeed, that is of the matters [worthy of] determination," he said: Allah commanded the believers to be patient regarding what harmed them. He said: Their harm—it is alleged—was that they used to say: O companions of Muhammad, you are not upon anything; we are worthier of Allah than you; you are misguided. So they were commanded to proceed and be patient.
