5156 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Darda' 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh al-Nahwi narrated to us, 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman narrated to us, I heard al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "nor taking secret lovers," he said: She is the one with a single lover, keeping it secret. Allah prohibited that.

His saying, the Almighty: "So if they are married"

[The First Interpretation]

5157 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Junayd narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah al-Dashtaki narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Hamzah, from Jabir, from a man, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Ali, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: regarding "So if they are married," he said: Her marriage/chastity (ihsan) is her Islam. He said: And 'Ali said: Scourge them.

  • Abu Muhammad said: It is a munkar (rejected) hadith.

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn 'Umar, al-Aswad ibn Yazid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Sha'bi, 'Ata', Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (in one of his two opinions), and Zirr ibn Hubaysh that they said: Her marriage/chastity is her Islam. Salim and al-Qasim said: Her Islam and her chastity.

[The Second Interpretation]

5158 - 'Ubayd Allah ibn Isma'il al-Baghdadi narrated to us, Khalaf (meaning: Ibn Hisham) narrated to us, al-Khaffaf narrated to us, from Harun, from Aban ibn Taghlib, from al-Hakam, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "So if they are married," he means: with husbands. Similar to this was narrated from al-Hasan, Mujahid, 'Ikrimah al-Khurasani, and Qatadah.

It was narrated from al-Sha'bi, al-Nakha'i, and Mujahid that they said: A free man does not marry (chastely) except with a free Muslim woman; he does not marry a slave girl, a Jewess, or a Christian woman.

His saying, the Almighty: "If they commit"

5159 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "If they commit an act of obscenity," he says: If they bring about adultery.
