5254 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding his saying: "Are devoutly obedient," he says: Obedient to Allah and to their husbands in what is ma'ruf (good/appropriate).

His saying the Exalted: "Guard [in their husbands' absence] what Allah would have them guard"

5255 - Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Ibn Dhi'b narrated to us, from Sa'id, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The best of women are those who, when you look at her, please you; when you command her, she obeys you; and when you are absent from her, she guards you regarding herself and her wealth." He said: And he recited this verse: "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women..." up to his saying: "...are devoutly obedient, guarding [in their husbands' absence] what Allah would have them guard."

5256 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Amr al-'Anqazi narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding his saying: "Guarding [in their husbands' absence] what Allah would have them guard," he said: Guarding for their husbands regarding their own selves.

5257 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan: "Guarding [in their husbands' absence] what Allah would have them guard," he says: Guarding their private parts in the absence of their husbands, guarding by the protection of Allah, not betraying their husbands in their absence.

His saying the Exalted: "What Allah would have them guard"

5258 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Muhammad al-'Anqazi narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "What Allah would have them guard," he said: They seek protection from Allah. Al-Suddi said: And it is in the reading of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: "What Allah would have them guard, so make peace with them."

5259 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubarak said: I heard Sufyan saying regarding his saying: "What Allah would have them guard," he said: Allah guards her, for He has made her like that.

His saying the Exalted: "And as for those from whom you fear"

5260 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "And as for those from whom you fear nushuz (disobedience/rebelliousness)," he said: That is the woman.

His saying the Exalted: "You fear their nushuz"

5261 - And by the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "And as for those from whom you fear nushuz," he said: That is the woman who is disobedient, treats the right of her husband with contempt, and does not obey his command; so He commanded him to admonish her and remind her of Allah and of the greatness of his right over her.
