His saying, the Almighty: "And Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment."

5823 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim reported to us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment," meaning: An abundant punishment.

His saying, the Almighty: "O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, so investigate."

5824 - My father narrated to us, Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Mubarak narrated to us, al-Hasan narrated to us that a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went out to travel and encountered a group of the enemy. They attacked them and defeated them, so a man among them fled, and a man followed him, desiring his possessions. When he overcame him with his spear, he said: "I am a Muslim, I am a Muslim." But he struck him quickly with the spear and killed him, and took his belongings. He said: This was brought to the attention of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to the killer: "Did you kill him after he said 'I am a Muslim'?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, he only said it seeking protection." He said: "Did you split his heart open?" He said: "Why, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "To know whether he was truthful or lying." He said: "And would I have known that, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "His tongue was only expressing what was in it, his tongue was only expressing what was in it." He said: The killer did not remain long before he died, so his companions dug [a grave] for him, but in the morning, the earth had cast him out. Then they returned and dug for him, but in the morning, the earth had cast him out to the side of his grave. Al-Hasan said: I do not know how many times the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said they buried him—two or three times—all of which the earth did not accept. When we saw that the earth would not accept him, we took him by his legs and threw him into one of those mountain passes. Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed: "O you who have believed, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, so investigate," the people of Islam, until the end of the verse. Al-Hasan said: By Allah, that was not but because the earth would have concealed one who is even worse than him, but Allah admonished the people so that they would not return [to such deeds].

His saying, the Almighty: "And do not say to one who offers you the greeting: 'You are not a believer.'"

5825 - al-'Abbas ibn Yazid al-'Abdi and Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri' narrated to us, both saying: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Dinar, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, met a man who had some booty with him, and he said: "Peace be upon you," so they killed him and took his booty. Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed: "And do not say to one who offers you the greeting: 'You are not a believer.'" The Muqri' said in his hadith: The Muslims met a man.
