7132 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And We would have obscured for them what they obscure," he says: We would have made [the matter] dubious for them.

7133 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad narrated to us, Mihran narrated to us, from Sufyan regarding: "And We would have obscured for them" [meaning:] from them, so they would not know.

His saying: "What they obscure"

7134 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And We would have obscured for them what they obscure," he says: We would have confused for them what they confuse [for themselves].

7135 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim informed me in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "What they obscure," he says: We would have made dubious for them what they make dubious for themselves.

7136 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d informed me in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And We would have obscured for them what they obscure," he said: They are the People of the Scripture; they parted from their religion and belied their messengers, and it is the distortion of speech from its proper contexts.

His saying: "And messengers were already mocked before you"

7137 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, client of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by—as it reached me—al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, and they mocked him and made fun of him, and that grieved him, so Allah, the Most High, revealed to him concerning their affair: "And messengers were already mocked before you, so those who mocked them were surrounded by that which they used to mock."

His saying: "So those who mocked them were surrounded"

7138 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim informed me in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "So those who mocked them were surrounded" [referring to] the messengers.
