professed it, to consume usury, and He forbade them from defrauding people in their affairs, and He forbade them from consuming people's wealth unjustly. So they consumed usury and consumed people's wealth unjustly, and they barred [others] from the religion of Allah and from belief in Muhammad. When they did that, Allah forbade them some of what He had made lawful for them in the Torah as a punishment for them, because they made lawful what He had forbidden them. So He forbade them every animal with an undivided hoof—the camel and the ostrich and similar beasts—and from cattle and sheep, their fats, except what their backs carry of fat and the intestines.

It is said: "This [refers to] cattle," and it is said that it is the belly fat, other than the suet and what is mixed with the bone of the meat. He says: "Thus did We recompense them for their transgression," meaning: "For their making lawful what Allah had forbidden them."

His saying, the Almighty: "And by their barring [others] from the way of Allah."

[6260] Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And by their barring [others] from the way of Allah," he said: "From the truth."

[6261] I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And by their barring [others] from the way of Allah much," they barred [others] from the religion of Allah and from belief in Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

His saying, the Almighty: "Much."

[6262] Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And by their barring [others] from the way of Allah much," he said: "Their own selves and others from the truth."

His saying, the Almighty: "And their taking usury while they had been forbidden from it."

[6263] I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And their taking usury while they had been forbidden from it," he said: "Allah had forbidden the people of the Torah, when they professed it, to consume usury, so they consumed usury."

His saying, the Almighty: "And their consuming the wealth of the people."

[6264] And by it, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And their consuming the wealth of the people," he said: "Allah had forbidden the people of the Torah, when they professed it, to consume the wealth of the people, so they consumed the wealth of the people. When they did that, Allah forbade them what He had made lawful for them in the Torah."
