His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people."

8697 - My father told us, ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi told us, Muhammad ibn Fudayl told us, from ‘Umar ibn Abi Za’idah, from Jami‘ ibn Shaddad Abu Sakhrah, who said: Sodomy existed among the people of Lot in women forty years before it existed in men.

8698 - Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani informed us, in what my father wrote, Isma‘il ibn ‘Abd al-Karim told us, ‘Abd al-Samad ibn Ma‘qil told me, who said: I heard Wahb ibn Munabbih saying: The people of Sodom, among whom Lot lived, were evil people who had become independent of women by using men.

His saying, the Almighty: "But the answer of his people was only that they said, 'Evict them.'"

8699 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah al-‘Ijli told us, Shababah ibn Sawwar told us, Warqa’ told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are a people who keep themselves pure," he said: From the posteriors of men and the posteriors of women. They were mocking them.

8700 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us, in what my father wrote, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are a people who keep themselves pure," he said: They are being scrupulous.

8701 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, who said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah, "Indeed, they are a people who keep themselves pure," he said: From their filthy deeds which they used to do—approaching men.

His saying, the Almighty: "So We saved him and his family, except his wife."

8702 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn Kathir told us, Sulayman (meaning his brother, Ibn Kathir) informed us, Husayn informed us, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: When the messengers of Allah entered upon Lot, he thought they were guests. He said: So he brought out his daughters by the road and placed his guests between himself and his daughters. He said: And his people came to him, rushing toward him. He said: "These are my daughters; they are purer for you," up to his saying: "Or I might take refuge in a powerful support." He said: Gabriel turned toward him and said: "Do not fear; we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you."
