His saying, the Almighty: "And they said, 'No matter what sign you bring us'"

8852 - Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, al-Muqaddami told us, Husayn ibn Numayr told us, Sufyan ibn Husayn told us: "No matter what sign you bring us"—no matter what thing you bring us to bewitch us with.

8853 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah: "No matter what sign you bring us," he said: The "ma" (in "mahma") [is used when] you bring us a sign, and he said: This contains the additional [particle] "ma."

His saying, the Almighty: "So We sent upon them"

8854 - My father told us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib told us, Abu Mu'adh told us, from 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman, from al-Dahhak, "So We sent upon them the flood," he said: Allah sent down upon them rain until everything was withheld from them.

8855 - My father told us, Ibn al-Asbahani told us, Yahya ibn Yaman informed us, from al-Minhal ibn Khalifah, from al-Hajjaj, from al-Hakam ibn Mina, from 'A'ishah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: "The flood" is death.

8856 - And my father told us, al-Himmani told us, Yahya ibn Yaman told us, from al-Minhal ibn Khalifah, from 'Ata', from 'A'ishah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: "The flood" is death.

And the second interpretation:

8857 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "So We sent upon them the flood," he said: They were rained upon day and night for eight days.

It was narrated from Abu Malik, al-Dahhak, and Qatadah that it is water. And it was narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr and al-Suddi that they both said: It is rain.

And the third interpretation:

8858 - My father told us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah told us, Jarir told us, from Qabus, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: "The flood" is a command from the command of your Lord; then he recited: "Then there circled upon it a circler from your Lord."
