His saying, the Almighty: "Passing by a people who were devoted to some of their idols"

8904 - My father told us, Nasr ibn Ali told us, Mubashshir ibn 'Umar told us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Fadl al-Ansari told us, from Abu al-'Awwam—meaning Imran al-Qattan—from Qatadah, regarding this verse: "They passed by a people who were devoted to some of their idols," he said: [They were] the Lakhm [tribe].

8905 - Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, al-Muqaddami told us, Ash'ath ibn 'Abd Allah told us, Abu Qudamah told us, he said: I heard Abu 'Imran al-Jawni say: Do you know who the people were that the Children of Israel passed by, [who were] "devoted to some of their idols"? I said: I do not know. He said: They are your people, the Lakhm and the Judham.

His saying, the Almighty: "They said, 'O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods'"

8906 - Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani and Muhammad ibn al-Wazir al-Wasiti told us, they said: Sufyan told us, from al-Zuhri, from Sinan ibn Abi Sinan, from Abu Waqid al-Laythi, he said: When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—went out to Hunayn, he passed by a tree to which the polytheists would hang their weapons, which was called "Dhat Anwat" (that of hangings). They said: "O Messenger of Allah, make for us a Dhat Anwat just as they have a Dhat Anwat." The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: "Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)! Just as the people of Moses said to Moses: 'Make for us a god just as they have gods,' you shall indeed follow the ways of those who were before you." The wording is Harun's, and Harun said in his hadith: "from Sinan ibn Abi Sinan, if Allah wills," while Muhammad ibn al-Wazir did not make an exception.

His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, those people will be destroyed for what they are in"

[The first interpretation]

8907 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Destined for destruction is that which they are in," he says: Ruined is what they are in. And it is narrated from al-Suddi the same.

[The second interpretation]

8908 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Destined for destruction is that which they are in," he says: Loss. And it is narrated from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam something similar.

His saying, the Almighty: "And void is that which they used to do"

8909 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, regarding the saying of Allah: "Indeed, those people will be destroyed for what they are in," he said:
