[His saying, the Almighty and Majestic: So when the earthquake seized them]
9024 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Husayn and Yazid ibn Harun told us, they said: Asbagh ibn Zayd told us, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So the earthquake seized them," and among them were those from whom Allah had discovered that their hearts were saturated with the love of the Calf and belief in it, and for that reason, the earth shook with them.
9025 - My father told us, Musa ibn Isma'il told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Abu Harun al-'Abdi, from Nawf al-Bikali, he said: "So they said: 'Show us Allah openly,' so the earthquake seized them and they were struck by a thunderbolt."
9026 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "So when the earthquake seized them," they died, then He brought them back to life.
9027 - My father told us, Abu Tawbah told us, Ibn al-Mubarak told us, from 'Awf, from Sa'id ibn Hayyan, he said: The seventy were only seized by the earthquake because they were not commanded [to worship] the Calf, nor were they forbidden from it.
His saying, the Almighty: He said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before, and me."
9028 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn Bashshar told us, Yahya ibn Sa'id told us, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Umarah, from 'Ali, he said: "So the earthquake seized them," and Moses began to pace back and forth, saying: "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before, and me. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? It is not but Your trial, by which You misguide whom You will and guide whom You will." So Allah brought them back to life and made them prophets.
9029 - My father told us, Musa ibn Isma'il told us, Hammad told us, from Abu Harun al-'Abdi, from Nawf al-Bikali, he said: So Moses said: "O my Lord, I came to You with seventy of the best of the Children of Israel, and I return to them while not one of them is with me. How shall I act toward the Children of Israel? Will they not kill me?" So it was said to him: "Ask their request and his (own) request," and I have granted that supplication to this Ummah.
His saying, the Almighty: "It is not but Your trial."
9030 - My father told us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "It is not but Your trial," he says: It is nothing but Your punishment.
