[His saying, the Almighty: "And makes lawful for them the good things"]

[The first interpretation]

8342 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr told us, Ibn Lahi'ah told us, 'Ata' ibn Dinar told me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding His saying: "The good things," he means the lawful, goodly [sacrificial] animals for them.

The second interpretation:

8343 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali told us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim told us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "The good things," he said: The good things are what Allah has made lawful for them from everything that they may obtain, so it is lawful from the provision [rizq].

His saying, the Almighty: "And forbids them from evil"

8344 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And forbids them from evil," he said: It is swine meat, usury, and what they used to deem lawful of the prohibited things among the foods that Allah has forbidden.

His saying, the Almighty: "And releases them from their heavy burden"

[The first interpretation]

8345 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And releases them from their heavy burden (isr)," he said: Their covenants and their pledges in the prohibition of what Allah had made lawful for them. It was narrated from Mujahid and 'Ikrimah that they both said: A covenant.

The second interpretation:

8346 - My father told us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah told us, Jarir reported to us, from Ya'qub, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "And releases them from their heavy burden (isr)," he said: Severity in worship. One of them would commit a sin, and it would be written on the door of his house that your repentance is to go out—you, your family, and your wealth—to the enemy, and you do not return until death comes to the last of you.

8347 - My father told us, al-Himmani Yahya told us, Ya'qub told us, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "And releases them from their heavy burden (isr)," he said: Severity of action.

8348 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Hisham told us, Sharik told us, from 'Ata', from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding "And releases them from their heavy burden (isr)," 'Ali [ibn al-Husayn] said: What they had made burdensome upon themselves, such as cutting the skin when urine touched them.
