- Abu Ya'qub Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Baghavi told us, Husayn ibn Muhammad told us, Jarir ibn Hazim told us, from Kulthum ibn Jabr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Allah took the covenant from the back of Adam at Nu'man—meaning 'Arafah—and He extracted from his loins every descendant He had created. He scattered them before Him like tiny ants (dharr), then spoke to them: "Am I not your Lord?" They said: "Yes, we have testified," lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: "Indeed, we were of this unaware." It was narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr similarly.

- 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan told us, from al-Mas'udi, 'Ali ibn Badhimah informed me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants," he said: Allah created Adam and took his covenant that He is his Lord, and He wrote down his appointed time (ajal), his provision (rizq), and his affliction (musibah). Then He extracted his offspring from his back in the form of tiny ants, and He took their covenants that He is their Lord, and He wrote down their appointed times, provisions, and afflictions.

- Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, 'Ali ibn Mis'ar told us, from al-A'mash and Habib, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants, and made them testify," he said: When Allah created Adam, He took his descendants from his back like the form of tiny ants, then He named them by their names. He said: "This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so, he will do such-and-such; and this is so-and-so, son of so-and-so, he will do such-and-such." Then He took two handfuls in His hand and said: "These are in Paradise and these are in the Fire," and it was decreed.

- Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Yahya ibn Yaman told us, from Sufyan and Sharik, both from Mansur, from Mujahid, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr regarding "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam from their loins," he said: He extracted them from his loins as a comb is extracted from wool (al-rami).

- Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Abu Yahya ibn Yaman told us, from Ja'far al-Razi, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b regarding "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants," he said: He extracted them from his loins as individual drops, and the faces of the Prophets were like lamps.

- Abu Zur'ah told us, Musa ibn Isma'il told us, Abu Hilal told us, from Abu Jamrah, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: Allah wiped the back of Adam, and he extracted his descendants from his back like tiny ants in a thin layer of water.
