8678 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah reported, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His statement: "Take what is given freely"—he says: Take the surplus, spend the surplus.

It is reported from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr that he said: What is wholesome to you of their characters.

The Second Aspect:

8679 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His statement: "Take what is given freely, and enjoin what is right"—he says: Take what is given freely to you of their wealth; whatever they bring to you of anything, then take it. This was before the descent of [Surah] Bara'ah, which ordained the alms (sadaqat) and their details, and what the alms reached. It was reported from al-Dahhak similarly.

The Third Aspect:

8680 - My father narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Maysarah al-Hamdani told us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad told us, from Ibn Jurayj, he said: I asked 'Ata' about His statement: "Take what is given freely"—he said: [Take] what they do not exceed [the limits] with.

The Fourth Aspect:

8681 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi wrote to me, Asbagh told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the statement of Allah: "Take what is given freely"—he said: He [Allah] pardoned ('afa) the polytheists for ten years in Mecca.

8682 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us by way of recitation, Sufyan reported from Ummi, he said: When Allah sent down to His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "Take what is given freely, and enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant," the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: What is this, O Gabriel? He said: Indeed, Allah commands you to pardon those who have wronged you, give to those who have deprived you, and join [in ties of kinship] those who have cut you off.

8683 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, from Ummi, from al-Sha'bi, similarly.

His statement, the Exalted: "And enjoin what is right."

8684 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah reported, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas: His statement: "And enjoin what is right"—he says: [Enjoin] what is recognized (al-ma'ruf). It is reported from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, al-Suddi, and Sufyan al-Thawri similarly.
