9044 - Abu Harun Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Kharraz narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Talhah ibn Amr narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "And their prayer at the House was not but whistling," he said: They used to interlace their fingers. He said: Sa'id ibn Jubayr showed me the place where they would perform the whistling, on the side of Abu Qubays.

His saying, the Almighty: "And clapping."

[The First Aspect]

9045 - Abu Khallad Sulayman ibn Khallad narrated to us, Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addab narrated to us, Ya'qub—meaning Ibn Abd Allah al-Ash'ari—narrated to us, Ja'far ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "And their prayer at the House was not but whistling and clapping," he said: Quraysh used to circumambulate the Ka'bah naked, whistling and clapping. "Al-muka" is whistling; they were likened to the whistling of birds. "And clapping" is applauding.

It was narrated from Ibn Umar, Mujahid in one of the narrations, Ibn Abza, Muhammad ibn Ka'b, Hujr ibn Anbas, and Atiyyah al-Awfi that they said: "Al-tasdiyah" is clapping.

Ibn Umar recounted: That they used to place their cheeks on the ground, clap, and whistle.

The Second Aspect:

9046 - al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "Clapping," he said: Whistling, [doing so] to confound Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—during his prayer.

9047 - It was read to Yunus ibn Abd al-A'la, Ibn Wahb informed us, Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad informed me, from the brother of Ibn Shihab's father, from Ibn Shihab regarding "And their prayer at the House was not but whistling and clapping," [he said]: "Al-tasdiyah" is their whistling when they mock the believers while they are praying. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, mentioned that the prayer of the disbelievers at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping, when they mocked the believers while they were praying.

The Third Aspect:

9048 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs ibn Umar narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from Ikrimah regarding His saying: "And clapping," he said: Their circumambulation of the House in a counter-clockwise direction (to the left).
