Sinan, from ‘Abd al-Malik al-Zarrad, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: No people have perished until they are excused by their own selves. Then he recited: "And their plea, when Our punishment came to them, was nothing but that they said: 'Indeed, we were wrongdoers.'"
[His saying, the Almighty: "Then We shall surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent."]
[The First Aspect]
8213 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih told me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas: "Then We shall surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent," he said: We shall ask the people about what they answered the messengers.
And the Second Aspect:
8214 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Suwayd ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz told us, from Yahya ibn al-Harith, from al-Qasim Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, that he recited this verse: "Then We shall surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent, and We shall surely question the messengers," he said: The servant will be asked on the Day of Resurrection about four qualities; your Lord will say: Did I not give you a body, so in what did you wear it out? Did I not give you knowledge, so what did you do with it? Did I not give you wealth, so in what did you spend it, in My obedience or in My disobedience? Did I not give you a lifespan, so in what did you exhaust it?
And the Third Aspect:
8215 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hammad told us, Mihran told us, from Sufyan, who said: Mujahid said: "Then We shall surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent, and We shall surely question the messengers," he says: People will be asked about "There is no god but Allah." Someone other than Mujahid said: "Those to whom [messengers] were sent" are the prophets.
And the Fourth Aspect:
8216 - My father told us, ‘Ali ibn Maysarah told us, ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Abi ‘Uthman told us, from Sufyan al-Thawri, regarding His saying: "Then We shall surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent," he said: Did the messengers convey [the message] to you?
And the Fifth Aspect:
8217 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj told us, al-Muharibi told us, he said: Layth told me, from Tawus, that he recited: "Then We shall surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent," he said: The Imam will be questioned about the people, the man will be questioned about his household, the woman will be questioned about her husband's house, and the servant will be questioned about his master's wealth.
