Ja‘far, from al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas, from Abu al-‘Aliyah, regarding the saying of Allah: "And when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,'" he said: The angels who were on the earth.

His saying, the Almighty: "Prostrate to Adam"

8238 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Safwan ibn Salih told us, al-Walid told us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir told us, from Qatadah, from Ibn ‘Abbas: "And when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,'" he said: The prostration was to Adam, and the obedience was to Allah.

8239 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad told us, Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bashshar told us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah told us, from ‘Abbad ibn Mansur, from al-Hasan: Regarding His saying: "And when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,'" He commanded them to prostrate, so they prostrated to him as an honor from Allah, with which He honored Adam, and so that they would know that nothing is hidden from Allah and that He does what He wills.

8240 - My father told us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Raja’ told us, Isra’il told us, from Muslim, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: He was only called Adam because he was created from the adim (surface) of the earth, from its face, from red, white, and black soil.

8241 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj told us, ‘Abdah told us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu al-Duha, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: He was only called Adam because he was created from the adim of the earth. Something similar was narrated from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr.

His saying, the Almighty: "So they prostrated, except Iblis; he was not of those who prostrated."

8242 - My father informed us, Sa‘id ibn Sulayman told us, ‘Abbad ibn al-‘Awwam told us, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, from Ya‘la ibn Muslim, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas: He said: Iblis's name was ‘Azazil, and he was one of the noblest of the angels among those with four wings, then he was later cast into despair (ublisa).

Something similar was narrated from Qatadah.

8243 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Minjab told us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: He was only called Iblis because Allah caused him to despair (ablasahu) of all good and caused him to lose hope in it. Something similar was narrated from al-Suddi.
