8386 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Safwan ibn Salih told us, al-Walid told us, Shu‘ayb ibn Ruzayq told us, from ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani, from ‘Ikrimah: "And eat and drink, but be not excessive" in clothing, food, and drink.
8387 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us: I heard Ibn Zayd saying: "And be not excessive," he said: Do not eat what is unlawful; that is excess.
[The Second Aspect]
8388 - My father told us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth told us, al-Layth told me, Ibrahim ibn Nashit told me: I asked ‘Amrah, the freed slave of Ibn ‘Umar, about excess: What is it? He replied: There is nothing you spend in the obedience of Allah that is considered excess.
His saying, the Almighty: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants?'"
[The First Aspect]
8389 - Ahmad ibn Sinan al-Wasiti told us, Abu Dawud told us, from Shu‘bah, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas: He said: A woman used to perform tawaf (circumambulation) during the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period) while she was naked, with a piece of cloth over her private parts, saying:
Today it appears, all of it or part of it... So whatever of it appears, I do not make it lawful.
Then it was revealed: "Take your adornment at every masjid," and: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the pure things of provision?'"
8390 - Muhammad ibn ‘Amir ibn Ibrahim al-Asbahani informed us, ‘Amir ibn Ibrahim told us, from Ya‘qub, from Ja‘far, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas: He said: The people of the Jahiliyyah used to perform tawaf around the House (the Ka‘bah) while naked, so Allah the Almighty revealed regarding them: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants?'"
8391 - My father told us, Yahya al-Himmani told us, Ya‘qub told us, with his chain of narration similarly, and added therein: The Quraysh used to perform tawaf around the House while they were naked, whistling and clapping: so Allah the Almighty revealed: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah?'" They were then ordered to wear clothes.
8392 - My father told us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth told us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih told me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas: His saying: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the pure things of provision?'" [1].
