"What has happened to Tha'labah?" They replied: "O Messenger of Allah, he acquired sheep, and the city became too small for him." They informed him of his situation, so he said: "Woe to Tha'labah, woe to Tha'labah, woe to Tha'labah." He said: Then Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, revealed: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to grow." Allah revealed to him the obligatory charities. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent two men for the collection of charity, a man from Juhaynah and a man from Banu Sulaym. He wrote for them how they should collect the charity and the ages of the camels. He commanded them to set out and take the charity. He said to them: "Pass by Tha'labah and by so-and-so, a man from Banu Sulaym, and take their charities." They went out until they came to Tha'labah and asked him for the charity and read to him the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said: "This is nothing but a jizyah (tribute), this is nothing but the sister of the jizyah. I do not know what this is! Go until you finish, then return to me." So they went away. The Sulami heard about them, so he looked at the best of his camels and set them aside for the charity, then he met them with them. When they saw them, they said: "This is not what is obligatory upon you, and we do not want to take this from you." He said: "Yes, take it, for my soul is pleased with it, and it is indeed for me." So they took them from him. When they finished with their charities, they returned until they passed by Tha'labah. He said: "Show me your book." He looked into it and said: "This is nothing but the sister of the jizyah. Go until I see what my opinion is." So they went until they came to the Prophet (peace be upon him). When he saw them, he said: "Woe to Tha'labah!" before they even spoke to him, and he prayed for the Sulami. They informed him of what Tha'labah had done and what the Sulami had done. So Allah revealed concerning him: "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: 'If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely spend in charity and be among the righteous.' So when He gave them of His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they were refusing," up to His saying: "...they are lying." And with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was a man from the relatives of Tha'labah, so he heard that and went until he came to Tha'labah and said: "Woe to you, O Tha'labah! Allah has revealed such-and-such concerning you." So Tha'labah went out until he came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked him to accept his charity. He said: "Indeed, Allah has forbidden me to accept your charity." So he began to pour dust upon his head. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: "This is your deed; I commanded you, and you did not obey me." When he refused to accept anything from him, he returned to his home. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away while not having accepted anything from him. He came to Abu Bakr when he became the Caliph and said: "You know my status with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and my position among the Ansar, so accept my charity." Abu Bakr said: "The Messenger of Allah did not accept it from you, so should I accept it?" So Abu Bakr did not accept it. When 'Umar assumed authority, he came to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, accept my charity." He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not accept it from you, nor did Abu Bakr, and I shall accept it from you!" So he did not accept it. So 'Umar did not accept it. Then 'Uthman assumed authority, so he came to him and asked him to accept his charity. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not accept it from you, nor did Abu Bakr, nor 'Umar, and I shall accept it from you!" So he did not accept it, and Tha'labah perished during the Caliphate of 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them all.
