the Messenger of Allah. When he stood over the enemy of Allah, 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, I said: 'The one who said such-and-such, and the one who said such-and-such?'—counting his days. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was smiling, until I spoke at length, and he said: 'Step back, O 'Umar, for I have been given a choice. It has been said: "Ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them; if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them." If I knew that if I exceeded seventy [times], he would be forgiven, I would have exceeded it.' He said: 'Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed over him and walked with him until he stood at his grave until he finished with it. I was amazed at myself and my boldness toward the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and Allah and His Messenger know best. By Allah, it was but a short while until these two verses were revealed: "And do not pray over any one of them who has died - ever, and do not stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient." So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not pray over a hypocrite after him until Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, took him.'
His saying the Exalted: "And do not let their wealth and their children impress you."
10208 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah informed us, from Qatadah, who said: "Among the preceding speech: 'And do not let their wealth and their children impress you' in this world. Allah only intends to punish them by them, meaning: in the Hereafter."
His saying the Exalted: "Allah only intends to punish them by them in the world."
10209 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And do not let their wealth and their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them by them in the Hereafter."
His saying the Exalted: "And [that] their souls might depart while they are disbelievers."
10200 - (*) 'Amr ibn Thawr al-Qaysari informed us in what he wrote to me, Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firyabi narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us regarding His saying: "And [that] their souls might depart" in this world, "while they are disbelievers."
His saying the Exalted: "And when a surah was revealed [enjoining], 'Believe in Allah and fight with His Messenger,' those of wealth among them asked your permission."
10201 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "those of wealth among them," he said: "The people of affluence." It was also narrated from Qatadah similar to that.

رسول الله فَلَمَّا وَقَفَ عَلَى عَدُوِّ اللَّهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بن أبي بن سَلُولٍ قُلْتُ: الْقَائِلُ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَالْقَائِلُ كَذَا وَكَذَا؟ أُعَدِّدُ أَيَّامَهُ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- يَبْتَسِمُ حَتَّى إِذَا أَكْثَرْتُ، قَالَ أخر عن يَا عُمَرَ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ خُيِّرْتُ قَدْ قِيلَ: اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِنْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ فَلَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنْ زِدْتُ عَلَى السَّبْعِينَ غُفِرَ لَهُ لَزِدْتُ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- وَمَشْي مَعَهُ حَتَّى قَامَ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ حَتَّى فَرَغَ منه فعجبت لي وجرئتي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- وَاللَّهِ ورسوله أعلم، فو الله مَا كَانَ إِلا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَاتَانِ الآيَتَانِ وَلا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلا تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ فَمَا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- عَلَى مُنَافِقٍ بَعْدَهُ حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَلا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَأَوْلادُهُمْ.
١٠٢٠٨ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ أَنْبَأَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: مِنْ مَقَادِيمِ الْكَلَامِ وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَأَوْلَادُهُمْ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ بِهَا أَيْ: فِي الآخِرَةِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَهُمُ بِهَا فِي الدُّنْيَا.
١٠٢٠٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلُهُ: وَلا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَأَوْلادُهُمْ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَهُمُ بِهَا فِي الآخِرَةِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَتَزْهَقَ أَنْفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ.
١٠٢٠٠ - (*) أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ ثَوْرٍ الْقَيْسَارِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَتَزْهَقَ أَنْفُسُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا، وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَإِذَا أُنْزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ آمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَجَاهِدُوا مَعَ رَسُولِهِ اسْتَأْذَنَكَ أولوا الطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ
١٠٢٠١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا مِنْجَابُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ أَنْبَأَ بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي رَوْقٍ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: أولوا الطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ قَالَ: أَهْلُ الْغِنَى- وَرُوِيَ عَنِ قَتَادَةَ: مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ.
