His saying the Exalted: "You do not know them, [but] We know them."

10301 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah narrated to us from Abu Rawq from al-Dahhak from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "You do not know them, [but] We know them," he says: We recognize them.

10302 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani informed us in what he wrote to me, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us from Ma'mar from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And among those around you of the bedouins..." up to His saying: "You do not know them, [but] We know them." Qatadah said: What is the matter with people who burden themselves regarding others? He says: So-and-so is in Paradise, and so-and-so is in the Fire. Yet if you were to ask one of them about himself, he would say: "I do not know." By my life, you are more knowledgeable about yourself than you are about the deeds of people. You have indeed burdened yourself with something that no prophet burdened himself with. The Prophet of Allah, Nuh (Noah)—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: "And what knowledge have I of what they used to do?" And the Prophet of Allah, Shu'ayb (Jethro)—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: "What remains [lawful] from Allah is best for you, if you are believers. And I am not a guardian over you." And Allah said to His Prophet Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—: "You do not know them, [but] We know them."

[His saying the Exalted: "We will punish them twice."]

[The first view]

10303 - Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Amr al-'Anqazi narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi from Abu Malik from Ibn 'Abbas: "And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become hardened to hypocrisy; you do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice." He said: The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—stood up to deliver a sermon on a Friday and said: "O so-and-so, leave, for you are a hypocrite; O so-and-so, leave, for you are a hypocrite." So he expelled them by name and exposed them. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab did not attend the Friday prayer that day due to a need he had. He met them while they were leaving the mosque, so he hid from them out of shame that he had not attended the prayer, and he thought the people had departed. They also hid from him, thinking that he knew about their affair. 'Umar entered the mosque and found that the people had not yet finished praying. Some men of the Muslims said to him: "Rejoice, O 'Umar, for Allah has exposed the hypocrites." So this is the first punishment: when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—expelled them from the mosque. And the second punishment is the punishment of the grave.

10304 - Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Saghani narrated to us, Abu Nuh narrated to us, Shu'bah informed us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "We will punish them twice," he said: The punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

[The second view]

10305 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Yaman narrated to us from Sufyan from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid, regarding "We will punish them twice," he said: Hunger and killing.
