and grant him peace: "It has become necessary." Then another funeral passed by, and some of the people praised it, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "It has become necessary." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, the first funeral passed and you said: 'It has become necessary,' then the latter passed and you said: 'It has become necessary.'" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) replied: "The angels are the witnesses of Allah in the heaven, and you are the witnesses of Allah on the earth. Whatever you bear witness to concerning anything, it becomes necessary." That is the word of Allah: "Work, for Allah will see your work, and His Messenger, and the believers."

[His saying, the Almighty: "And others deferred for the command of Allah"]

10056 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: There were three men who did not secure themselves to the pillars; they were deferred for a year, not knowing whether they would be punished or their repentance would be accepted. So Allah the Almighty revealed His saying: "And others deferred for the command of Allah."

10057 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And others deferred for the command of Allah": They are Hilal ibn Umayyah, Murarah ibn Rabi', and Ka'b ibn Malik from the Aws and the Khazraj.

[His saying, the Almighty: "Either He will punish them"]

10058 - He says: He causes them to die while in their disobedience, "or He will accept their repentance." So He deferred their matter and did not mention them with repentance when He accepted the repentance of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and his companions, and He abrogated that and said: "And [He turned in forgiveness to] the three who were left behind" [the verse].

10059 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding His saying: "Or He will accept their repentance, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise": They are the three who were left behind, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) deferred their matter until their repentance came from Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He).

[His saying, the Almighty: "And those who took a mosque for harm and disbelief"]

10060 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And those who took a mosque for harm": They were people from the Ansar who built a mosque. Abu 'Amir said to them: "Build your mosque and draw strength with whatever power and weaponry you can, for I am going to Caesar, the King of Rome, and I will bring an army of the Romans, so that I may expel Muhammad and his companions."
