His saying, the Almighty: "Nor to prefer their own lives to his."
10105 - My father told us, Abu al-Jumahir told us, Sa'id ibn Bashir told us, from Qatadah: Meaning His saying: "Nor to prefer their own lives to his," he said: When he (the Prophet) sent forth armies and detachments (sariyyah), they had no right to leave the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) exposed. And when the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out to battle himself, it was not for anyone to stay behind him except by his command.
His saying, the Almighty: "That is because they are not afflicted by thirst."
10106 - Abd Allah ibn Sulayman told us, al-Husayn ibn Ali told us, Amir ibn al-Furat told us, Asbat told us, regarding His saying: "That is because they are not afflicted by thirst," and al-zama' (thirst): is al-'atash (thirst).
His saying, the Almighty: "Nor any weariness."
10107 - And with the same chain (sanad), from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Nor any weariness," and al-nasab (weariness): is al-'ana' (exhaustion/hardship).
10108 - My father told us, Isa ibn Yunus al-Ramli told us, al-Walid told us, from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Maryam, from Raja' ibn Haywah and Makhul: That they both disliked covering the face (al-talthim) against the dust in the path of Allah.
10109 - My father told us, Isa ibn Yunus al-Ramli told us, al-Walid told us, he said: I heard al-Awza'i, Sa'id ibn Abd al-Aziz, Ibn Jabir, and Ibn al-Mubarak, regarding this verse: "They are not afflicted by thirst, nor weariness, nor hunger in the path of Allah."
10110 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab told us, Bishr ibn Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn Abbas, regarding His saying: "Nor hunger (makhmasah)," he said: Famine (maja'ah). And it was narrated from Qatadah and al-Suddi similar to that.
His saying, the Almighty: "Nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers."
10111 - My father told us, al-Rabi' ibn Nafi' or Tawbah told us, Abd Allah ibn Bukayr al-Ghanawi told us, from Hakim ibn Jubayr, from al-Hasan ibn Sa'd, the client (mawla) of Ali, from his father, from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wanted to go to battle, so he called me and insisted that I stay behind before I could speak. So I wept, and he said: "What makes you weep, O Ali?" I said: "What makes me weep are more than one thing; the Quraysh will say: How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and let him down! And another thing makes me weep: I used to seek to perform jihad in the path of Allah because Allah the Almighty said: 'Nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers' (the verse), and I wanted to seek reward from Allah."
