His saying, the Exalted: "Then We made you successors in the earth"

10267 - My father told us, Abu Salamah told us, Hammad told us, Thabit al-Bunani told us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: 'Umar said: Allah the Exalted says: "Then We made you successors in the earth after them, to see how you will act." He said: "You have been made a successor, O son of the mother of 'Umar, so look at how you act."

His saying, the Exalted: "To see how you will act"

10268 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Safwan told us, al-Walid told us, Khulayd and Sa'id told us, from Qatadah, regarding Allah's saying: "Then We made you successors in the earth after them, to see how you will act." It was mentioned to us that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab read this verse and said: "Our Lord has spoken the truth; He only made us successors in the earth to look at our deeds. So perform for Allah your best deeds by night and day, and in secret and openly."

His saying, the Exalted: "And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who do not expect the meeting with Us say"

10269 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah told us, from Qatadah: "And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences" up to His saying: "of my own accord." This is the saying of the polytheists of Makkah to the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

His saying, the Exalted: "Say, it is not for me to change it of my own accord"

10270 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali told us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim told us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf told us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "The punishment of a great day," meaning: a punishment.

His saying, the Exalted: "Say, if Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you"

10271 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah told us, from Qatadah, who said: Then Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you."

His saying, the Exalted: "Nor would He have made it known to you"

10272 - My father told us, Abu Salih told me, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Nor would He have made it known to you," he says: He would not have informed you of it."
