[The second interpretation:]

10273 - My father Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah told us, from Qatadah: "Nor would He have made it known to you," meaning: He would not have made you aware of it.

The third interpretation:

10274 - My father mentioned from Malik ibn Isma'il, Khalid ibn 'Abd Allah told us, from Hanzalah, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, who said: "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you," meaning: nor would He have warned you of it.

His saying, the Exalted: "Then I had remained among you a lifetime before it; then will you not reason?"

10275 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah told us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Then I had remained among you a lifetime before it; then will you not reason?" He said: He remained forty years lost, and he saw the dream of prophethood for two years, and revelation came to him for ten years in Makkah and ten years in Madinah, and he passed away while he was sixty-two years old, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

10276 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman told us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali told us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat told us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "I had remained among you a lifetime before it," he said: "I did not recite it to you, and I did not mention it; then will you not reason?"

His saying, the Exalted: "Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah"

[The first interpretation]

10277 - Abu 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani told us, Hafs ibn 'Umar al-'Adani informed us, al-Hakam ibn Aban told us, from 'Ikrimah, who said: al-Nadr, who is from the Banu 'Abd al-Dar, said: "When the Day of Resurrection arrives, al-Lat and al-'Uzza will intercede for me." Then Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, revealed: "Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or denies His verses? Indeed, the criminals will not succeed."

[The second interpretation:]

10278 - My father told us, Ibn Nufayl al-Harrani told us, Miskin ibn Bukayr told us, from Mu'adh ibn Rifa'ah, who said: I heard Abu Khalaf al-A'ma say: Ibn Abi Sarh used to write the revelation for the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He came to the people of Makkah, and they said: "O Ibn Abi Sarh, how did you write the Quran for Ibn Abi Kabshah?" He replied: "I would write whatever I wished." Then Allah the Exalted revealed: "And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed."
