9216 - Ahmad ibn Uthman informed us, in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Saddi, regarding His saying: "An acquittal from Allah and His Messenger to those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists," he said: When this verse was revealed, He was acquitted of the treaty of every polytheist, and He did not make any treaty after it except with those who had already been in a treaty, and He granted each people their term.
His saying, the Almighty: "To those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists."
9217 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid regarding His saying: "An acquittal from Allah and His Messenger to those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists," meaning the people of the treaty—Khuza'ah, Mudlij, and those who had a treaty with him and others. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, arrived from Tabuk when he had finished with it, and he intended to perform Hajj. Then he said: "Polytheists attend the House and circumambulate naked, and I do not like to perform Hajj until that does not happen." So he sent Abu Bakr and Ali, and they toured among the people at Dhu al-Majaz, at the places where they used to sell, and throughout the entire pilgrimage site. They granted the people of the treaty safety for four months.
His saying, the Almighty: "So travel freely in the land."
9218 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us from Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn Abbas, regarding His saying: "So travel freely in the land for four months," he said: A limit from Allah for those who made a treaty with His Messenger, (granting them) four months to travel freely in the land wherever they wish.
9219 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Walid ibn Burd narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad narrated to us from Ja'far ibn Muhammad from his father: Regarding His saying: "So travel freely in the land for four months," for the polytheists, and no naked person shall circumambulate around the House.
His saying, the Almighty: "Four months."
[The first interpretation]
9220 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid regarding His saying: "So travel freely in the land for four months," and they are the sacred months that have passed in succession: twenty days from the end of Dhu al-Hijjah until ten days have passed from the month of Rabi' al-Akhir, then they have no treaty. And it was narrated from al-Saddi and al-Dahhak similarly.
