His saying, the Almighty: "And We took the Children of Israel across the sea."

10555 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun told us—the wording is that of Muhammad ibn al-Hasan—from Asbagh ibn Zayd al-Warraq, from al-Qasam ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: He was driven to the sea, and there is a story about it, for fear that Moses would strike it with his staff while he (Pharaoh) was unaware, thus becoming disobedient to Him. When he saw the two hosts and they drew near, the people of Moses said: "We are surely to be overtaken!" (Moses said): "Do what your Lord has commanded you, for you have not been lied to." He said: He promised me that when I reached the sea, it would be divided for me so that I could cross it. Then he mentioned the staff after that, and he struck the sea just as Allah had commanded him and just as Moses had been promised. When all of the companions of Moses had crossed, all of the companions of Pharaoh entered, and the sea closed over them just as He had commanded.

His saying, the Almighty: "The sea."

10556 - My father told us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yunus told us, Talhah ibn Zayn told us, from Khalid ibn Ma'dan, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar, who said: It reached me that the sea was thinned out by a hand; what the angel would not be heedless of, he slapped upon the earth.

His saying, the Almighty: "So Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them."

10557 - Abu Zur'ah told us, 'Amr ibn Hammad told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi: Moses went out with six hundred thousand and twenty thousand—they did not count the very young because of their youth, nor the sixty-year-olds because of their old age, and they were only counted between those ages, excluding the offspring. Pharaoh followed them, with Haman at his vanguard, with one million and seven hundred thousand horses, none of which were female.

His saying, the Mighty and Majestic: "In tyranny and aggression."

10558 - My father told us, Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim al-Dawraqi told us, 'Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq told us, al-Hasan ibn Waqid told us, from Yazid al-Nahwi, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "So Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and aggression," he said: Aggression, exaltation, and insolence in the Book of Allah is tyranny.

His saying, the Almighty: "Until, when drowning overtook him."

10559 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa told us, Salamah told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad ibn Ka'b, from 'Abd Allah ibn Shaddad, who said: I was told that when the Children of Israel entered, and none of them remained before Pharaoh—and he was on a horse of his—until he stood at the edge of the sea and stood in his place, the horse feared to proceed. Then Gabriel appeared to him on a female horse of a greenish-grey color, and he fled with it away from him (Pharaoh), so the stallion smelled it; when he smelled it, he pursued it, and the horse proceeded with it, with Pharaoh upon it. When the soldiers of Pharaoh saw that he had entered, they entered with him. He said: Gabriel was in front of him, followed by Pharaoh, and Michael was on a horse behind the people, urging them on with his horse, saying: "Catch up with your companion!" Until, when Gabriel had separated from the sea, and there was no one in front of him, Michael stood on the other side, and there was no one behind him, the sea closed over them.
