the Children of Israel, and none of them remained before Pharaoh—and he was on a horse of his—until he stood at the edge of the sea and stood in his place, the horse feared to proceed. Then Gabriel appeared to him on a female horse of a greenish-grey color, and he fled with it away from him (Pharaoh), so the stallion smelled it; when he smelled it, he pursued it, and the horse proceeded with it, with Pharaoh upon it. When the soldiers of Pharaoh saw that he had entered, they entered with him. He said: Gabriel was in front of him, followed by Pharaoh, and Michael was on a horse behind the people, urging them on with his horse, saying: "Catch up with your companion!" Until, when Gabriel had separated from the sea, and there was no one in front of him, Michael stood on the other side, and there was no one behind him, the sea closed over them.

10560 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hisinjani told us, Abu al-Jamahir told us, Sa'id ibn Bashir told us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Until, when drowning overtook him," he said: The enemy of Allah did not find the taste of death and was seized by his forelock.

His saying, the Almighty: "'I believe that there is no god but He in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims.'"

10561 - My father told us, Abu Salamah told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Yusuf ibn Mihran, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: When Allah drowned the family of Pharaoh, he said: "'I believe that there is no god but He in whom the Children of Israel believe.'" Gabriel said: O Muhammad, if you could see me as I take of the mud of the sea and stuff it into the mouth of Pharaoh for fear that mercy might overtake him.

10562 - Yunus ibn Habib told us, Abu Dawud told us, Shu'bah told us, from 'Adi ibn Thabit and 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: Gabriel said to me: If you could see me as I take of the mud of the sea and stuff it into the mouth of Pharaoh for fear that mercy might overtake him.

10563 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj told us, Abu Khalid al-Ahmar told us, from 'Umar ibn 'Abd Allah al-Thaqafi, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: When Allah drowned Pharaoh, he pointed with his finger and raised his voice: "'I believe that there is no god but He in whom the Children of Israel believe.'" He said: Gabriel, peace be upon him, feared that His mercy would precede His wrath regarding him, so he began to take the mud with his wings and strike his face with it and kick him.
